The right-wing hate speech polluting the debate over health care is generating more and more threats against President Obama, some truly frightening.

CNN anchor Rick Sanchez reports that when President Obama visited Phoenix, Ariz. on August 17, local minister Steven Anderson of the Faithful World Baptist Church, who strongly expresses hatred for Obama in many of his sermons, told his congregation that he wished him dead. In a disturbing twist, it was discovered that Chris Broughton, the man who brought an AR 15 assault rifle to the Phoenix rally where Obama spoke, had attended Anderson's sermon. In a later interview, Broughton said he concurred with his pastor's wish to see Obama "die and go to hell." As many as twelve men were seen walking around the Phoenix Convention Center with guns on that day.

President Obama faces 30 death threats a day, a 400 percent increase from former President Bush, according to Ronald Kessler, a veteran investigative journalist and conservative who recently authored a book about the Secret Service.

Kessler notes that funding cutbacks have already left the first African-American president in U.S. history particularly vulnerable. The book, which alleges that the cash-strapped Secret Service is endangering the president by cutting corners, has sent shockwaves through Washington. "There's no question his life is in danger." "Tomorrow, Obama could be assassinated ... simply because the Secret Service was not doing what it used to do, " said Kessler.

"We have half the number of agents we need, but requests for more agents have fallen on deaf ears at headquarters," a Secret Service agent told Kessler.

"There's a tremendous feeling within the Secret Service that they are risking an assassination," Kessler told Canadian TV.

As CNN's Rick Sanchez said on the air, "This looks serious. This almost looks like this is coming to the point where we are even beyond maybe where this nation was on November 22 of 1963, when JFK was assassinated, when there was also an environment of hate in this country."

As racist attacks increase and protestors continue to bring guns to presidential events, it is strikingly clear that President Obama is vulnerable to harm. Are the Secret Service and FBI doing enough to protect him? Will they confront and investigate those who threaten our president so that they can be prosecuted and jailed?

We cannot allow funding problems to weaken the organizations charged with protecting the life of our nation's president. In 2003, the Secret Service and FBI became part of the Department of Homeland Security and now must compete with 20 other agencies for oversight from their chief, Janet Napolitano. She must use her authority to ensure that the Secret Service and FBI put more agents on the ground to protect President Obama and confront and investigate those who threaten him. It is time for Americans of every stripe to insist that the Secret Service and FBI operate at the highest levels of effectiveness.

Healthcare reform is for all Americans,not just
the poor. If you're not very rich already, you're just one major medical bill from being poor, or at the very least having a drastic change in your life style.
I am asking to the vast majority of American to wake up and smell the roses while you can,
because if we don't, we will continue to pay their bills and contribute to the lifestyles

The normally nonchalant Barack Obama looked nonplussed, as Nancy Pelosi glowered behind.

Surrounded by middle-aged white guys — a sepia snapshot of the days when such pols ran Washington like their own men’s club — Joe Wilson yelled “You lie!” at a president who didn’t.

But, fair or not, what I heard was an unspoken word in the air: You lie, boy!

The outburst was unexpected from a milquetoast Republican backbencher from South Carolina who had attracted little media attention. Now it has made him an overnight right-wing hero, inspiring “You lie!” bumper stickers and T-shirts.

The congressman, we learned, belonged to the Sons of Confederate Veterans, led a 2000 campaign to keep the Confederate flag waving above South Carolina’s state Capitol and denounced as a “smear” the true claim of a black woman that she was the daughter of Strom Thurmond, the ’48 segregationist candidate for president. Wilson clearly did not like being lectured and even rebuked by the brainy black president presiding over the majestic chamber.

I’ve been loath to admit that the shrieking lunacy of the summer — the frantic efforts to paint our first black president as the Other, a foreigner, socialist, fascist, Marxist, racist, Commie, Nazi; a cad who would snuff old people; a snake who would indoctrinate kids — had much to do with race.

I tended to agree with some Obama advisers that Democratic presidents typically have provoked a frothing response from paranoids — from Father Coughlin against F.D.R. to Joe McCarthy against Truman to the John Birchers against J.F.K. and the vast right-wing conspiracy against Bill Clinton.

But Wilson’s shocking disrespect for the office of the president — no Democrat ever shouted “liar” at W. when he was hawking a fake case for war in Iraq — convinced me: Some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it.

“A lot of these outbursts have to do with delegitimizing him as a president,” said Congressman Jim Clyburn, a senior member of the South Carolina delegation. Clyburn, the man who called out Bill Clinton on his racially tinged attacks on Obama in the primary, pushed Pelosi to pursue a formal resolution chastising Wilson.

“In South Carolina politics, I learned that the olive branch works very seldom,” he said. “You have to come at these things from a position of strength. My father used to say, ‘Son, always remember that silence gives consent.’ ”

Barry Obama of the post-’60s Hawaiian ’hood did not live through the major racial struggles in American history. Maybe he had a problem relating to his white basketball coach or catching a cab in New York, but he never got beaten up for being black.

Now he’s at the center of a period of racial turbulence sparked by his ascension. Even if he and the coterie of white male advisers around him don’t choose to openly acknowledge it, this president is the ultimate civil rights figure — a black man whose legitimacy is constantly challenged by a loco fringe.

For two centuries, the South has feared a takeover by blacks or the feds. In Obama, they have both.

The state that fired the first shot of the Civil War has now given us this: Senator Jim DeMint exhorted conservatives to “break” the president by upending his health care plan. Rusty DePass, a G.O.P. activist, said that a gorilla that escaped from a zoo was “just one of Michelle’s ancestors.” Lovelorn Mark Sanford tried to refuse the president’s stimulus money. And now Joe Wilson.

“A good many people in South Carolina really reject the notion that we’re part of the union,” said Don Fowler, the former Democratic Party chief who teaches politics at the University of South Carolina. He observed that when slavery was destroyed by outside forces and segregation was undone by civil rights leaders and Congress, it bred xenophobia.

“We have a lot of people who really think that the world’s against us,” Fowler said, “so when things don’t happen the way we like them to, we blame outsiders.” He said a state legislator not long ago tried to pass a bill to nullify any federal legislation with which South Carolinians didn’t agree. Shades of John C. Calhoun!

It may be President Obama’s very air of elegance and erudition that raises hackles in some. “My father used to say to me, ‘Boy, don’t get above your raising,’ ” Fowler said. “Some people are prejudiced anyway, and then they look at his education and mannerisms and get more angry at him.”

Clyburn had a warning for Obama advisers who want to forgive Wilson, ignore the ignorant outbursts and move on: “They’re going to have to develop ways in this White House to deal with things and not let them fester out there. Otherwise, they’ll see numbers moving in the wrong direction.”

For God has not given us of the "spirit of fear", but the power of love and a "sound" mind. We will not allow ourselves to take offemse to the ignorance of the word "nigger".
We know who we are. We also know that the Afri-
can Man was the first man and every other race
developed from our offspring. Yes that white man is "our offspring". Love that little "John-ny-come-lately".When a person calls you a nig-
ger, it should be taken in the same light as a
little child in a diaper swinging at his pa-

Did you know that some insurance companies actually consider domestic violence a "pre-existing condition"? That is, women whose boyfriends or husbands have beaten them could actually be denied coverage for that reason.

It's sickening. And it's just one more reason we need a public health insurance option, a health care plan that won't put profits before basic human decency.

It's not enough to pass new regulations. Like credit card companies and big banks, health insurance companies will always be looking to find a new loophole.

And while insurance companies rack up profits by denying coverage, their conservative friends in Congress are busy defending them from the competition they'd face from a public plan and arguing we should give them another chance to clean up their act.

We've all heard the tragic stories about how health insurance companies use the "pre-existing conditions" rule to deny coverage to people suffering from chronic disease.
But extending it to domestic violence victims is simply beyond the pale and it's perfectly legal in eight states and the District of Columbia. In fact, one survey found that 8 of the 16 largest insurers in the country have used domestic violence as a factor in denying coverage.2

These outrages won't end until we force private insurance companies to compete with a high-quality, affordable public plan that'll keep them honest.

But right now, Congress is debating proposals that would fatally weaken or delay implementation of the public health insurance option. So we've got to keep fighting, can you call Sens. Bayh and Lugar today?

The best way we can "protect" Obama against the very real threat of violence is by standing up for what's right and showing that he isn't alone. Now is not the time for ambivalence or complacency. I'm sickened by the outpouring of apologies and volunteerism that occurs in the AFTERMATH of a tragic event (i.e., Hurricane Katrina).

Let's be bolder in our stands, more assertive in our interactions. Yes, we can be CHRISTIAN, or for that matter, any religion which upholds the two greatest commandments and therefore, be assertive, non-compromising, and soldiers for the fight for affordable health care for all.

This is rediculous. Have you ever thought not everyone thinks themselves "democrat", "republican", but they vote for the best candidate. I myself am not surprised by anything this President is doing, but am very afraid for our Country as it seems he does not like anything about this great Country and is doing everything in his power to tear it apart.
No, I did not vote for him, and yes, I agree with Joe Wilson...does that make me racist?? This reverse racism that is going on now, is absolutely disgusting. Everyone bringing up race does not want the problem to ever go away and use it further their causes....I am tired of it.

Your comments are very interesting. Are you saying that there are not some racist elements in the opposition that is being shown toward the President? You may be opposed and not a racist, but if so why don't you denounce those racist that are showing their opposition? If you are silent then it appears that you consent. By not denouncing the racist rhetoric then you get lumped with the ones who are racist and are also in opposition. I voted for President Obama and I am not a democrat. It would be most interesting to hear your opinion on the Bush administration and the Republican controlled Congress that walked in lock step with Bush and Cheney.

Let us hear how their actions proved that they loved America far more than Barack Obama and the Democrats.

Please expound on the deficits that Bush ran up and our economic meltdown just hours before he left office.

While you are at it, tell us how the rest of the civilized world dealt with Bush. Oh, don't forget the decline of education in America and the high hurdles that exist for our citizens to get an education beyond high school.

We just heard that more people die from the lack of healthcare that all who have died in auto accidents and murders annually in America. I'm sure the Bush administration showed so much love for the sick and the uninsured. How much dialog did you hear from Bush and the Republican about healthcare in the last 8 years. They really demonstrated their love for this country and her people.

And finally, the families of all those dead soldiers who died in Iraq are just so proud of the Republicans and Bush, even though they lied to go to war. But these soldiers were so loved by Bush that he made them sacrificial lambs for Bush and Cheney's greed for Iraqi oil. Oh what love for this nation.

Poor Barack Obama is trying to destroy everything with healthcare for all Americans, education for those who desire one in this country, respect for America around the world, bringing the economy from the brink of collapse,[increase in stock market, housing is going up, and unemployment is slowing down], and trying to keep the planet clean and safe. He is such an evil president for doing these things but George Bush was right on point.
